Singapore’s creative professionals have long been the unseen force behind the visuals that shape our world. From brand campaigns and digital experiences to art, media, and storytelling, visual communication is at the heart of how ideas reach people. Yet for many in this space, the realities of creative work, from income benchmarks to career development, often remain unclear and under-represented.

Making VisComm Matter is an initiative led by OuterEdit, in collaboration with CMPU (Communications and Media Professionals Union) and VICPA (Visual, Audio, Creative Content Professionals Association, Singapore), committed to changing exactly that. The initiative was built to better understand and support professionals working within Singapore’s Visual Communications (VisComm) sector through a nationwide survey, culminating in the collective voice of a unified creative industry.

Understanding the VisComm Landscape

The VisComm industry includes a wide range of professionals, from designers, illustrators, and photographers to art directors, writers, and freelancers. Despite its size and importance, the community often lacks data that captures what these professionals experience in their day-to-day work. This lack of insight complicates the process of designing fairer systems, policies, or programmes that meet the real needs of such a diverse pool of creative disciplines.

That’s why we need your help; by participating in the survey, you are helping to paint a clearer picture of Singapore’s creative landscape. The information gathered will serve as a foundation for future initiatives that strengthen the industry and ensure that creative professionals are represented in meaningful ways.

Building a More Sustainable Future for Creatives

The Making VisComm Matter survey is designed to map the needs, challenges, and aspirations of VisComm professionals in Singapore. It seeks to understand working conditions, earnings, and career growth opportunities while identifying where resources, protections, and support may be lacking. With stronger data, industry partners and policymakers can better understand how to support long-term career growth, improve work standards, and close existing gaps in the creative economy.

By hearing directly from practitioners, the project can highlight what truly matters to the community and ensure that future developments are built on lived experience rather than assumption. With this, Making VisComm Matter stands to create a more sustainable and equitable future for creative professionals in Singapore. Every creative participating contributes to building a foundation for a more cohesive and respected VisComm community.
